Kundli Matching and Guna Milan Explained: What the 36 Points Mean
Kundli matching is the traditional Indian practice of comparing two birth charts before marriage. The most common method is Ashtakoota Guna Milan, which compares the Moon's position in both charts and gives a score out of 36. This guide explains the eight kootas, walks through a sample score, and shows how to use the result sensibly.
What do you need for matching?
You need the date, exact time and place of birth for both people. The matching uses each person's Moon sign (Rashi) and Moon nakshatra, so an accurate birth time is important, especially if the Moon was close to a sign boundary. If you do not have the charts yet, make them first with the free Kundli.
The eight kootas
- Varna (1 point): temperament and ego compatibility.
- Vashya (2): mutual attraction and influence.
- Tara (3): health and well-being of the couple.
- Yoni (4): physical and instinctive compatibility.
- Graha Maitri (5): mental wavelength and friendship between the Moon-sign lords.
- Gana (6): basic nature, grouped as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
- Bhakoot (7): emotional bond, family and prosperity together.
- Nadi (8): health and genetic compatibility. It carries the most weight.
Add them up and you get 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36. Each koota awards full, partial or zero points depending on how the two Moon signs and nakshatras relate.
What score is considered good?
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum for a match to be considered acceptable. 24 to 32 is seen as very good, and above 32 as excellent. Treat these as guidelines, not verdicts.
A worked example
Here is a made-up score to show how it reads. Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 1.5, Yoni 3, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 0 and Nadi 8 add up to 26.5 out of 36. By the usual yardstick that is a good match. But look at the zero in Bhakoot. Many astrologers would ask whether a cancellation applies, for instance when the Moon-sign lords are friends or are the same planet. They would also look at the rest of the charts before deciding whether the zero matters. A single koota rarely tells the whole story, and the total can hide a weak area that deserves a conversation.
Nadi and Bhakoot: the two that worry families
Nadi Dosha arises when both people share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), which costs all 8 points. Bhakoot Dosha arises with certain Moon-sign pairings and costs all 7. Because these two carry 15 of the 36 points, a single dosha can drag a good match below the line. Classical texts describe several exceptions, and some traditions treat them more leniently than others. Do not abandon a match on this alone. Ask an astrologer to check the exceptions in both charts.
What the score does not show
Guna Milan only compares the Moon charts. A thorough reading also checks the 7th house, Venus and Jupiter, Mangal Dosha in both charts (see Manglik Dosha myths and facts), and the Dasha periods each person will be in. A couple with a modest score can have strong supporting factors, and a high score does not remove the need for honest conversations about values, family, money and daily habits.
Common mistakes
- Fixating on the total. 31 with an unexamined dosha can deserve more attention than 22 with good supporting factors.
- Using a wrong birth time. A shifted Moon nakshatra changes several kootas at once.
- Matching only names or sun signs. Vedic matching uses Moon signs and nakshatras.
- Ignoring the Dashas. Even a well-matched couple may pass through difficult periods at different times. Read about Vimshottari Dasha to understand why.
- Letting astrology replace conversation. No score replaces getting to know each other.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Guna Milan score for marriage?
Traditionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum, 24 to 32 is considered very good and above 32 excellent. These are guidelines, and a full reading looks beyond the number.
Can we marry if the score is below 18?
Some traditions advise against it, while others look at the whole chart and consider the score one factor among several. Many families consult an astrologer before deciding. The final decision is always the couple's.
What is Nadi Dosha in Kundli matching?
It is when both partners share the same Nadi, which removes the 8 points that koota carries. Classical texts list exceptions, so it should be checked in detail rather than treated as automatic rejection.
Is online Kundli matching accurate?
A tool applies the standard Ashtakoota rules correctly if the birth details are right. It cannot weigh the 7th house, Dashas or exceptions the way a person can, so treat it as a first step.
Done well, matching helps a couple go into marriage informed and talking, rather than anxious about a number.
