The twelve houses (Bhavas) are the stage on which the planets act. Each house governs an area of life. Learning them is the quickest way to start reading a chart yourself, because every question, from career to marriage, maps to one or more houses.
The twelve houses
- 1st house, Tanu Bhava: body, personality, health and overall direction.
- 2nd house, Dhana Bhava: money, family, food and speech.
- 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava: courage, siblings, skills and communication.
- 4th house, Sukha Bhava: home, mother, property, peace of mind and education.
- 5th house, Putra Bhava: children, creativity, intelligence and romance.
- 6th house, Ripu Bhava: daily work, health issues, debts, competition and service.
- 7th house, Kalatra Bhava: marriage, partnerships and business associates.
- 8th house, Ayur Bhava: transformation, sudden events, research and inheritance.
- 9th house, Dharma Bhava: luck, higher learning, mentors, father and long journeys.
- 10th house, Karma Bhava: career, status and public reputation.
- 11th house, Labha Bhava: income, gains, friends and fulfilment of desires.
- 12th house, Vyaya Bhava: expenses, losses, sleep, foreign lands and spirituality.
Kendra, Trikona and Dusthana
Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the angular houses (Kendras) and give strength and action. Houses 1, 5 and 9 are the Trikonas and carry fortune. Houses 6, 8 and 12 are the Dusthanas, which are challenging but also teach resilience and depth. Some traditions also group houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 as the Upachaya houses, which tend to improve with time and effort.
How to start reading
Find your Lagna, the rising sign, which becomes the 1st house. In the whole-sign system many Vedic astrologers use, the next sign becomes the 2nd house, and so on around the chart. Then see which planets sit in which house. A benefic such as Jupiter in the 10th supports career, for instance, while the sign on each house tells you the style in which that area plays out. Remember each planet also rules houses, so the same planet can mean different things in different charts. For a wider introduction, see what a Kundli is and how to read it.
A worked example
Imagine a chart with Libra rising. Libra is the 1st house, Scorpio the 2nd, Sagittarius the 3rd, and so on. Suppose Saturn sits in Capricorn, which is the 4th house in this chart. A reader would begin with the themes of the 4th: home, family, property and peace of mind. Saturn there might suggest responsibility around home, a slower route to settling down or a strong sense of duty to family. A reader would then check which houses Saturn rules for this ascendant, which sign it sits in and how it is aspected. The answer is never from one placement alone. It is a pattern across the chart.
Houses and timing
Houses show where events are likely to appear, while Dasha periods and transits suggest when. When a planet's Dasha opens, the houses it sits in and rules come alive. Our guide to Vimshottari Dasha shows how this works. For marriage in particular, the 7th house is combined with a chart comparison, which you can read about in Kundli matching.
Houses and relationships between them
Houses also work in pairs. The 2nd and 11th together describe savings and income, while the 4th and 10th balance home and career. The 3rd and 9th link effort and fortune, and the 6th and 12th connect work and rest. Looking at such pairs gives richer insight than a single house, and it explains why an area of life can be strong in one way and slow in another.
Common mistakes
- Reading a house in isolation. Look also at its lord, the planets in it and the planets aspecting it.
- Calling the 6th, 8th and 12th houses plainly bad. They carry lessons, research, service and spiritual depth.
- Mixing up the 1st house with the Sun sign. The 1st house comes from the Lagna, which depends on your birth time.
- Using an uncertain birth time. A few minutes can shift the Lagna and move every house.
- Expecting one house to give a yes or no answer. Charts describe tendencies.

Frequently asked questions
Which house is the most important in astrology?
The 1st house is often treated as the anchor of the chart, since it shows you and sets the other houses. In practice astrologers weigh all twelve together, plus the planets and the running Dasha.
What is the 7th house in astrology?
It is Kalatra Bhava, the house of marriage, partnerships and close associates, including business partners. Its sign, its lord and the planets aspecting it are all considered.
What does an empty house mean?
It is common and not a flaw. An empty house is judged by the sign on it, its lord and where that lord sits. The area of life is still active.
How do I find my houses?
